Mosquitoes have one pair of wings, six long legs, antennae, and a long slender mouthpart and body. They carry serious health risks and reproduce in many types of environments. They are very versatile and can reproduce in all forms of water and survive in most climates around the globe. The life cycle of the mosquito includes the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Each stage lasts 5-14 days. The first three stages primarily require water. Adult females lay their eggs on water. Because female mosquitoes require proteins and other nutrients to develop, they are the only ones who bite.
The adult female uses their proboscis to pierce the skin so they can feed on blood, which has the necessary protein and iron needed for egg production. Mosquito saliva is transferred during the bit and causes an itch. Some species can ingest pathogens as they bite and then transmit them to future hosts. Because they transmit diseases such as West Nile, Zika, Malaria and more, mosquitoes cause the deaths of over 700,000 people each year.
